Expirience with our equipment:
Expedition vehicle (motorhome):
Chassis Volvo FM 9 - 300 (4x4 drive):
The vehicle is simply and easy to drive - nearly like a
sedan car. We never were disapointed using it off-road. With it´s 4x4 drive and differential locks it goes everywhere. The horse power (300 HP) are sufficient but not too much. The automatic
shift gear and the 4x4 with all the gear boxes consume a lot of energy. Perhaps 400 HP would have been just right and would have consumed most pobably less Diesel (we need in average 30 Liter per
100 km). The seats are just first class and also the suspension. The huge Michelin tires 14.00 R 20 XZL TL
156J are also helping to dampen the bumps. Unfortunately the wear to fast. But we used them mainly at paved roads and
they are more for dirt roads.
Also positive is the low noise level inside the cabin. The vehicle is well noise protected.
- Problems:
We are with the quality of Volvo
not at all happy. Firstly we had two years problems with the automatic gear box. The gear shift particularly between the 2nd and 3rd gear was extremely hard and Volvo wanted to convince us about
the normalitiy of this. Finally after two years they accepted the problem and solved by chancing the software.
The other problem is that at the front tires specifically the outer section is wearing extremely fast. Volvo calls this a tire problem. Which is nonesense. It is a Volvo problem - but no
solution so far.
Next: within 24 hours of not using the engine we loose all the air pressure (since the vehicle was in the Volvo garage). They couldn´t find the problem and since we had to leave for shipping the
rig we have to live with the problem.
And now the problem with the oil pressure switch - failed after 34.000 km. And as per Volvo quite a common problem.
We hope that now we had all the „sh......“ and from now onward no more problems.
Cabin of the motorhome: made by the company Langer & Bock:
We are absolutely happy with the quality and if things had to be adjusted Langer&Bock did it fast and competent. We can rally recommend this company.
-Concept:
We are still enthusiastic about the concept of not using gas fir cooling and heating (we are not having gas at
all). Our decision to do everything electrically was exactly right. Our six large solar panels supply enough power to the six large batteries that we need our diesel generator set only few ours -
more as a safety than anything else. Even the first three weeks in April here in Canada the solar power was more or less enough (together with the power from the Volvo eletrical generator while
travelling). The use of our induction cooking plates is extremely energy friendly. It heats up so fast like using a gas cooker). Also the diesel heaters are fast and energy friendly.
The fresh water and waste water capacity is enough to make us for 3 weeks independent - a very good feel.
And finally we still love the layout of our cabin - we really feel at home.
Motor Bike:
-
- The motorbike was mounted on a platform at the rear end of the vehicle. It was good to have this small Honda Enduro 125 ccm. But the handling was to difficult. Everytime to lower the platform with a winch and than to untow the bike, to clean it (because at the rear it become really dirty dispite of covering it). So we changed to concept to bicycle with electrical support
Foldable Mountain Bikes from Montague:
-
- This bikes are good and light. But we had to fold them everytime we used them and the storage room was small. So this bikes were malhandled to much and suffort a lot. So we changed it also.
"Riese und Müller" touring bikes with electrcal support drives:
-
-
This bikes (not at all cheap) with this additonal electrical direct drive system are mounted at the platform at the rear of our camper and protected by an aluminuim housing.
Additonal space for many small things.
This bikes are just ideal. To drive as normal touring bikes and when ever you need just add the electrical extra power (steep hills and front wind are now not existing anymore. You can choose between 4 support torque: from 75% to 300% support). Additionally a 18 gear drive is available. And during down hill driving you can switch to a generator mode and laod the batteries.
We are just enthusiastic about this new technology. We are loading the batteries overnight from our camper batteries - which are loaded by solar power. A really enviromentially system

Diesel generator from "FischerPanda" with 4 KW:
-
- It runs without problems. But we need it very rarely. Because we drive a lot (here in Canada) and charge our batteries) and since we have to stay in campgrounds we use more often external electrical power to charge the batteries. But it is good system und a good feel to have this additional resource
Cooling and freezing box from "Luna":
-
-
This 80 liter box is not cheap but has an extraordinary good quality standard. The Danfoss compressor runs after 3 years without problem, the box is very good insulated and the
power consumption is low. It has two compartments and each can be adjusted separatly. It has 3 power connections: AC and 2 DC (24 and 12 V).
It is really recommendable

Cooling and freezing box from "Waeco":
-
-
The „Luna“ with 80 liter was not enough capacity. So we fitted this small Waeco in the garage. „Luna“ had not such a compact and small one.
We used it the first time after 2 months in Canada. We use it only for freezing (-18°C). After short time we got problems with our battery capacity. We searched for long time without finding the problem. Untile we discovered that the Waeco box was practically constantly running. The isolation is poor and the cooling generator even more (made in China). - We switched the box off and the problem with the batteries was gone.
-
We have now a cheap box but not useable.
