Yukon (from 14. 8. to 20. 8. 2010):
Alaska HWY: from border Alaska to Dawson City
=> Kluane Lake (Cottonwood RV Park):
This place is the best we had so far. The campground offers places directly on the shore of the lake. Is in an excellent condition and very clean.
The Kluane Lake is very long (appr. 100 km) and quite small. But still broad enough to develop dangerous waves when windy. This conditions have led to desaster for fishing boats.
The lake is surrounded by high mountains and fed by a glacier which is the reason for the turquois colour.
We meet here Warren and Babette - our neighbors - and had two wonderful evenings together. Also a beautiful boat ride. Both have an excellent running restaurant in Whitehorse: www.gandpsteakhouse.com
Also Eric and Iris from Zürich joined us here (we had met both in Talkeetna and on teh ferry to Valdez before). Thanks you four for the wonderful time together. Eric and Warren has been successfull with fishing and we got one big (4 pounds) lake trout - thousand thanks!!!
=> Whitehorse:
The capital of Yukon with (unbelievable) 25.000 inhabitants and just a little more than 100 years old. It lays on the banks of the Yukon river and was originally the supply port for Dawson. Here the famous Yukon paddle wheelers steamed towards Dawson City.
Today Whitehorse is a very colourful and clean town with many restaurants, museums, and theater and many shops. E.g. the G&P Steakhouse, a good Mexican Restaurant and many more. As well as a excellent micro brewery.
We met very interesting people: Alice and Jai and their lovely two children who are on a world tour with their self built Ford four wheeler. They connect this world tour with their foundation: „The Muskoka Foundation“ which helps poor people around the world in a ney and different way. The idea is to use the time and expertice of world travellers (volunteers) to improve life in selected communities. We will also participate.
Please refer their homepage: www.TheMuskokaFoundation.org
=> The best restaurant in Whitehorse: G&P Steakhouse & Pizza
We have visited our friend Babette and Warren in their restaurant and had a fantastic dinner (very good entrees - mussles, calamaris in ginger and honey; main course - grilled lamb chops with salad, steak in mushroom; fantanstic bier) - it was so delicious and the interieur very tasteful.
=> Drive to the Cassiar HWY (37):
This section of the Alaska HWY is rather unspectacular (also because we had mostly rain). The Cassiar HWY starts 21 km before Watson Lake and leads towards southeast.
